Get in the Homecoming Spirit

While Dominican is continuing the high school tradition of homecoming, how many students really get in the spirit?

Freshman Ashton Baran is getting in the spirit tonight by playing in the intramural volleyball tournament. "My team is going to dominate tonight," he says. "I haven't really seen anyone with extra spirit for homecoming week but that's all going to change when we hit the court!"

Cheer on all of your favorite intramural players tonight at 7:00 in the gym.

Explaining the Global Financial Crisis

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 1, 2008, DU professors will be speaking about the current global financial crisis. This is an amazing opportunity for students to learn more about the bailout and how it affects us. Many students have taken out loans to pay for education, but given the crisis of certain banks not granting loans to businesses or individuals, how will student loans be affected?

Fortunately, I haven't had to take a loan to pay for school but I'm curious to find out from those of you with loans or needing future loans as to how this will affect your situation. Will you be able to get loans for next year? Will the interest increase dramatically? What do you think?

The event will be tomorrow from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Springer Suite. Free cookies and coffee will be available.

HOMECOMING SOCCER GAME!

On Saturday, October 4 is the homecoming soccer game! The boys game starts at 1:00 p.m. and the girls game will start at 3:30! "We are really excited about the homecoming game this year," said junior Nico Toro. "It is going to be a great game!" Make sure to come out and cheer for our school!

Alternative Homecoming

Saturday is homecoming! For most older Dominican University students, they have an altnative homecoming night instead of going to the dance. My friends and I have gotten dressed up and gone out do dinner for the past two years. This year we are planning on doing the same. What do you and your friends plan on doing for homecoming instead of attending the dance? Be sure to check back for pictures of my homecoming night!

Pizza Party: Biased Crowd

To follow up Natalie's post, I talked to junior Joe Saraceno who attended the debate pizza party. "When McCain spoke, people put their heads down and sometimes even moaned. When Obama spoke, they clapped, cheered, and put their fists in the air. It was definately a biased crowd."

Saraceno and I are both Republicans, and we feel that McCain was very good in his debate. "Obama talked about what he thought he could do. His personality seemed very niave. McCain went off on what he has experienced." I completely agree with Saraceno. McCain gave more concrete ideas while Obama gave abstract, broad ones.

Presidential Debate

As Maryann wrote last week, Student Involvement is hosting a pizza party right now so students can watch the first Presidential Debate together. I am unable to attend the DU party but am curious as to how it's going. Are students pleased with the candidates? Are some yelling in frustration at the TV? How involved or heated up are DU students?

I'm curious...give me some insight. Please leave your thoughts and comments as to how DU students participated or did not participate in tonight's debate.

MYSTERY IN MAZZUCHELLI!

Did anyone go to the murder mystery Friday night in the Social Hall? It sounded kind of cool and I was wondering if any of you felt like playing detective and cracked the case. If you did go, let us know how it was.

Just to Follow Up on a Previous Post...

...I happened to be walking through the Social Hall and heard some of Matt Hoffer's concert last week. I thought he was pretty good. I heard him playing "Truth Hits Everybody," an old Police song. That made him pretty cool in my book. What did everyone else think? If you guys want to know more about him, check out his myspace at myspace.com/matthoffer

One more SGA thing....

Feel free to check out this section of SGA's page on the myDU site. This page I've linked for you is supposed to introduce DU students to the Senate of SGA. It's very out of date....the page has all of SGA's Senate members from LAST YEAR!! We're going into the FIFTH WEEK of the 2008-2009 school year. If positions were determined last semester (in the spring!), why hasn't the page been updated??

With this year's sophomore president, is the website an indication as to how she plans to run SGA? If so, all in favor of impeachment say "I" or feel free to email SGA with any questions, comments, concerns at SGA@DOM.EDU

My thoughts on SGA

This afternoon I was talking to my friend, we'll call her "Claire", about last week's Student Government Association elections. I found that the information she told me was very disappointing. Apparently, the 2008-2009 president elected is a sophomore girl. (The candidates ran for positions last semester and were elected but additional positions still need to be filled.) Now I asked myself, "How can a sophomore be elected president of the student government?"

"Claire" then told me that no one had run against her and that's how the freshman claimed victory. In addition to that, there was still a significantly large number of SGA positions still open that no one was interested in last semester.

Why are Dominican Students not interested in SGA? SGA is the voice of the student body. Wouldn't you think that a large number of students would like to make life on campus better for us all? In addition, wouldn't you think that seniors or juniors that were in SGA the previous year(s) would be running for president rather than a freshman going into her sophomore year??

What's going on with SGA?

Studying in the Cyber

The Cyber Cafe is not only a social gathering place but also a safe study zone. Students can grab a bite to eat, hit the books and head to a comfy booth to get started on homework.

Victory for Men's Soccer

Congrats to the men's soccer team on their victory over the University of Chicago. The Stars' Lionel Tovar scored the only goal of the game. The soccer team is now 3-2 according to the DU athletic's page. Keep up the great work!

Student Involvement: Up Close and Personal

Each day, Dominican students flock to a number of various places on campus. Sure they come and go as they please, whether it’s of academic purpose or not. However, Dominican students are also coming to school to experience the many activities sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement. According to their website, Student Involvement strives to make its presence known to the diverse and growing student body: “The Office of Student Involvement provides every chance for every student to be involved on campus.”

You may ask yourself, “How can I get involved?” The question is almost impossible to answer because the opportunities are nearly endless! Student Involvement not only manages all clubs and organizations on campus but also plans many events. The activities sponsored by Student Involvement range from comedy events to yoga class to Chicago’s favorite sports teams’ games. According to Student Involvement Coordinator, Rachel Costello, Student Involvement has a little bit of something for everyone.

“The office of Student Involvement tries to find as many dynamic opportunities for students to explore,” Costello said. “There are many events held on campus that are traditions and we plan them according to the needs of the student body. The sponsored off-campus events are opportunities for the students to get a chance to experience events at half the cost.”

A ticket to a Chicago White Sox game, for example, ranges from $8.50 to $65. Sure you can pay less than $10 to watch the 2005 World Series champs, but who wants to sit in the last row of the nose bleed section? Student Involvement gives Dominican students the opportunity to attend a Sox game, in a great section, for only $15! Other off-campus events, such as other professional sports games and Broadway in Chicago, are also available to students at only a fraction of the cost.

Aside from the extraordinary opportunities off-campus, Student Involvement also sponsors many events students are welcome to participate in on campus. These events take place each semester and even before the fall semester begins. Every year at Dominican, the first week of the new school year is called Welcome Week. During this time, Student Involvement puts on their largest affair, DU Fest, an event that takes place the Monday before the first day of school each year, is a Dominican tradition. All students are welcomed and encouraged to attend a barbecue and participate in fun games, listen to music, and socialize with other Dominican students and staff according to the Director of Student Involvement Cari Cook.

“This year, DU Fest had about 500 attendees,” she said. “It’s a university tradition!”

This success continues to grow as enrollment expands. The Welcome Week at Dominican also included a Quad Party, live music featuring Steve Means and a comedic performance from Baron Vaughn. Student Involvement not only schedules and plans the events, but also reaches out to students for new ideas.

“We choose performers and events based on student suggestions and feedback,” said Cook. “We’re also proactive, and research performers and events that are coming to the Chicago area that might interest the Dominican community.”

Associate Director of Student Involvement Bill Dlugokienski said students have the most influence on what event take place on campus.

“Each Fall, a group of students attends the National Association of Campus Activities conference in which they get the chance to see different performers and talk with different agencies to see what is available to bring to campuses,” said Dlugokienski. “We also ask for student suggestions during new student orientation.”

Although the Office of Student Involvement may be hidden in the basement of Coughlin, their presence on campus is extremely visible. Colorful posters, vivid flyers and creative banners decorate the hallways of every building on campus. They contain information about upcoming events, new attractions, and the various student clubs and organizations Student Involvement oversees. Like all other departments on campus, Student Involvement relies upon their myDU website to get the word out.

“Our myDU site has been updated with new information about our upcoming events,” said Cook.

Another press release Student Involvement created is “8 Days a Week.” 8 Days a Week is a promotional flyer telling students what activities are taking place that week from Monday to Monday. Each table in the dining room is decorated with 8 Days a Week every Sunday evening. 8 Days a Week poster are also posted all over the Cyber Café and the Grill area.

“This lets the students know what is coming through our office in the upcoming week and allows for any further questions or concerns,” Costello said.

“You can also view 8 Days a Week from ourwebsite at any time,” added Cook.

In addition to these publicity efforts, Student Involvement submits news on myDU’s Campus News section.

“Campus News is effective in promoting events but has to be used in conjunction with other publicity events,” Dlugokienski said. “We try to post most events on Campus News but we also use flyers, banners and other methods to make sure there are different vehicles to convey our message.”

“We try to use as many diverse avenues to ensure that the majority of the student population is aware of upcoming programs and events,” added Costello.

These ‘diverse avenues’ are getting Dominican students interested in the events hosted by Student Involvement.

“We get a good mix of everyone!” said Cook. “Different events draw different crowds, but the important thing is that everyone who attends has a good time.”

Student Involvement’s presence on campus is easy to see. Hallways, classrooms, bulletin boards and social gathering places are decorated with banners, flyers and posters for the various events on and off-campus. As you walk to your next class or log on to a computer on campus, pay attention to the many different ways for you to experience Student Involvement.

Stephen Kinzer will be speaking again on Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. He will be speaking about "Turkey Between Two Worlds." It will be held in Parmer 108.

Kinzer Follow-Up

My colleague, Maryann Pisano (aka PrincessMaryann), told you last week that Stephen Kinzer would be speaking on Semptember 11. For those of you that were unable to attend the engagement, my regrets. Kinzer took a look into the aftermath of the attacks from September 11 and the consequences our nation must face due to the war on terror we're still fighting. It was a very interesting, very informative lesson on life, politics and the way our country functions. The speech made listeners think about the other innocent people involved in our war all over the world. Stephen Kinzer is extremely intelligent and a lively speaker. Be sure to check out more Kinzer events on the Dominican website.
